Tentative Weekly Schedule for 2/23 to 2/27/15

 

ELA 7

Monday                    104     (2/23)- Narrative Reading/Literary Essay/The Outsiders

Daily Essential question(s):

·         What are specific skills necessary to read and analyze narrative more effectively?

·         How does an author use a VARIETY of literary decisions/strategies to establish and develop the THEME throughout a story?

·         How do writers (literary essayists) respond to literature?

1)IN- Distribute novels and collect book numbers. Review essential questions.

2)      Discuss reading process:

a.       CAQ- Plot and general understanding

b.      Analysis and application-

                                                               i.      Theme

                                                             ii.      Vocabulary

iii.OTHER Reading strategies (NO questions/Connections)

3)      Finish discussions of Journal/intro questions of Opinionaire. (COLLECT JOURNAL RESPONSES)

4)Distribute:

a.Reading Analysis Strategies and review

b.Chapter 1 CAQ for The Outsiders and preview.

5)      Begin reading Chapter 1 of The Outsiders as a group. As we read note location of answers to CAQ and analysis topics for annotations.

6)      OUT- Finish reading Chapter 1 of The Outsiders and complete the CAQ for Wednesday.

 

 

Tuesday                    105     (2/24)- Narrative Reading/Literary Essay/The Outsiders

Daily Essential question(s):

·         What are specific skills necessary to read and analyze narrative more effectively?

·         How does an author use a VARIETY of literary decisions/strategies to establish and develop the THEME throughout a story?

·         How do writers (literary essayists) respond to literature?

1)IN- Chapter 1: Choose one of the following quotes provided from Chapter 1 and spend 7 minutes discussing/responding to it in writing.

a.Literary elements

b.Analysis- What does it tell you about the story, themes, characters, setting, . . .?

2)Partner, then group discussion of lines:

a.Character/conflict/setting/theme?

b.Responses/thoughts?

3)Focus question/Lesson Objective- How does tracking reading and your thinking while reading help you deepen your understanding of the text? Distribute and explain: Characterization log

4)Distribute CAQ for Chapters 2 & 3

5)Students will begin to independently read Chapter 2 of The Outsiders. As they read, they will complete:

a.       the CAQ

b.      BEGIN Character Attributes tracker (Use info from Chapter 1 for this as well).

6)OUT- Finish reading and required work for The Outsiders Chapter 2 for Friday.

 

 

Wednesday                         106     (2/25)- Narrative Reading/Literary Essay/The Outsiders

Daily Essential question(s):

·         What are specific skills necessary to read and analyze narrative more effectively?

·         How does an author use a VARIETY of literary decisions/strategies to establish and develop the THEME throughout a story?

·         How do writers (literary essayists) respond to literature?

1)IN- Distribute Vocabulary Builder Activity and explain/model expectations.

2)With a partner, complete the 10 words rating activity.

3)Group correction of Vocabulary rating activity.

4)Discuss Chapter 1 CAQ  (Check in)

a.       Students will volunteer to share answers.

b.      ALL students will add to and improve their own answers to the Chapter 1 CAQ as we correct them as a group.

5)Focus question/Lesson Objective- How does tracking reading and your thinking while reading help you deepen your understanding of the text? Distribute and explain: Theme Book Mark

6)Work on Chapters 1 & 2:

a.       Reading and CAQ

b.      Vocabulary terms

c.       Stopping points/ theme book mark

7)OUT- Finish work on Chapters 1 & 2 for Friday and being reading Chapter 3 for Monday. Complete:

a.CAQ & Vocabulary

b.At least two stopping points/book mark notes

c.Add to characterization/character analysis

 

 

Thursday                  107     (2/26)- M-STEP Practice

Daily Essential question(s):

·         What is the M-STEP test?

·         How is the M-STEP formatted?

·         What are the questions/tasks that students will have to perform on the M-STEP?

1)IN- What have you already heard about the new M-STEP testing? What initial questions do you have about it?

2)Turn on your device and go to the following website:  http://sbac.portal.airast.org/practice-test/

3)Explain/show how to get into the test:

a.Scroll to bottom of screen, locate green box STUDENT INTERFACE PRACTICE AND TRAINING TESTS

b.Click on “sign in”

c.Select GRADE 7 and click on YES

d.In the upper right, click on “Start ELA Grades 6-8 Training Test”

e.Do NOT make any changes. Just scroll to the bottom and click YES, then verify by clicking YES, START MY TEST

f.Complete the directions for the Sound Test

4)      Test Instructions and Help- Read together and discuss

5)      Begin the assessment- We are ONLY looking at question #1 today

a.       Zoom in/out

b.      Click next- What happens?

6)      What are the directions? What is the question asking you to do?- Group read and discussion.

7)      Complete the task.

8)      OUT- Finish work on Chapters 1 & 2 for Friday and being reading Chapter 3 for Monday. Complete:

a.CAQ & Vocabulary

b.At least two stopping points/book mark notes

c.Add to characterization/character analysis

1)IN- Who is the narrator of The Outsiders? Discussion and activity to identify narrator and importance of narrative p.o.v./perspective to a story.

a.Benefits of a third person narrator? Drawbacks?

b.Benefits of a first person narrator? Drawbacks?

2)      Discuss/correct Chapters 1 & 2 Vocabulary Builder words

3)      Chapter 2: Choose one of the following quotes from Chapter 2 and spend 7 minutes discussing/responding to it in writing.

4)      Partner, then group discussion of lines:

a.Character/conflict/setting/theme?

b.Responses/thoughts?

5)OUT- Catch up on/finish any remaining work you may have for The Outsiders Chapters 1-3.
